England, Sussex

Hello World!

It’s been more than two weeks since I moved to England and I’m finally able to sit relaxed at what I call home now and surf the Internet aimlessly and shamelessly. To achieve this fundamental human right ( as the fins would say ) I had to jump through the hoops of the IT service administration, but it was worth the wait. I travelled to Bristol today for a talk my supervisors gave at University of Bristol. Most serendipitously ( this is a word ) I saw a wifi network of the same name as my home university’s and decided to give it a try.

It actually worked!

Turns out, this whole hoops and certificates and what-not business that I dealt with a whole afternoon is part of a greater project that identifies students and academic staff around the world! I can’t say if every university has it because it seems new, but if there is an eduroam wi-fi it should be in that system. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised and I think this scores some of the few points that the UK has won since I’ve come here. Don’t worry I sense the best is yet to come — I have to see Stonehendge, get drunk on ale and go to a decent theatre for starters…
